she can now look forward to a happy life where she will be loved and cared for. i love a happy ending :-) wishing you love, light and sunshine :-) emma x it's quite probable that at some stage in your life you will have heard the 'starfish story'. briefly, to recap: a man was taking a walk along a vast stretch of beach after a big storm, and he found the beach littered with starfish as far as he could see. far in the distance, he noticed a small boy. as the boy walked towards him, he paused every so often, bent down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. as the boy came closer the man could see that he was throwing the starfish back into the sea. he called out to the boy 'good morning. may I ask what it is that you are doing'? the boy paused, looked up, and replied 'throwing the starfish back into the sea. the storm has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves'. they will die, unless I throw them back into the water'. the man replied, 'there must be thousands and thousands of starfish on this beach, you won't be able to make much of a difference'. the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the sea. he turned, smiled and said, 'i made a difference for that one'! adapted from a story by loren eiseley (1907–1977) i'd also like to remind you of a quote by gandhi: 'be the change you wish to see in the world' i've just returned from a yoga holiday in spain and witnessed something that gave me the inspiration for this post. we were travelling from the airport to the venue with the venue owner and he stopped to feed and give water to a stray dog at the roadside. the dog was too weak to stand. i watched her eat and drink as she lay at the side of the road. her hair was missing from around her neck where she had been tied up, she was desparately thin. despite this, her nature shone through, she was a beautiful animal. i think the wordless communication between humans and animals is amazing, you could see her appreciation at being helped and cared for. over the course of the week she was fed and watered twice a day and given powder to ensure the ticks dropped off her. she became able to stand and walk and plans are being made to get her treated and taken to a rescue centre. she was given the name of 'dolly'. an amazing example of kindness, taking action and making a difference over the course of a week and beyond. dolly's life will now be very different to what it could have been. i look forward to hearing what happens next and will keep you posted. it's amazing (and great) that small actions can have such a massive impact. i hope this post gives you inspiration over the easter weekend. love and light, emma x most of you will probably agree that life can be pretty busy a lot of the time. this is all the more reason to know, connect and make use of your 'pause button'. what do i mean by 'pause button'? a pause button can be anything that takes you into the present moment and/or gives you time to connect, reflect, consider and/or listen to your inner voice. a chance for you to pause and step off the day to day treadmill for a period of time. also, a single point of focus or concentration. what can you use it for? a calm and tranquil life decompressing self study (svadhyaya) to consider a solution to a problem or concern to reflect to work out how you feel and what you want/need from a situation and/or your life to create space in your day to check in with yourself, your inner voice possible pause buttons meditation or 'creating space' practise creating art photography cooking chanting mindfulness decorating music (listening to or creating) journal writing walking sitting (indoors or outdoors) focussing on something (a flower, the sea, a tree blowing in the breeze) possible benefits feeling balanced, centred and calm knowing yourself hearing yourself relating to others well having focus and discipline learning how to pause and know when you need to feeling relaxed and learning how to access relaxation perspective if you decide to explore this i hope you'll find it interesting, beneficial and fun throughout 2014 if it's not something you already do :-) you could record your experience in a journal. i'd love to hear how you get on and/or if this is something you already do. namaste emma |
